Thoughts to Begin With

Culture creates values, enriches life and the worlds we live in. Culture lives community. For culture means the “how” in “we” (in German: das “Wie” im “Wir”)!

Working and consulting for this is the mission of Culture Creates Values.

Culture provides orientation and support. It poses and gives answers to the questions Why? What for? To what end? Europe, with its history, should draw lessons, at the very least from the 20th century, in responsibility toward the next generations, from what Europe has destroyed and from what has made it great. Lack of culture (Unkultur) and high culture (Hochkultur) play an essential role in this.

In fact, it is far easier to talk about culture in lip service than to actually live it. The difference lies in disappointment or fulfilment... The latter motivates people, and that is what we should orient ourselves toward and work for. The appreciation of our own existence, the stylish, empathetic treatment of our fellow human beings and others, and of the resources of our nature and environment: all of these find their reflection in our culture and can be refined into high culture. This should motivate us to work on the “how”, and it should motivate us to inspire people for culture, that is, for the “How”, and to bring them along as an individual part of our culture and our society. Beyond that, art, creativity and innovation provide insights into, among other things, the state of a society. They can enliven a region in valuable ways and are thus counted among the important location factors. Together, and in interplay with science and business, they form the so-called creative milieus of a knowledge society. In many places, an understanding of the value of art and culture and their development must first be prepared. Every cultural refinement and enhancement in turn forms the basis for a fruitful and constructive dialogue. In many places, however, a culture of cooperation and dialogue between the fields of art, culture, science and business must also first be established. Living these visions is the call of the hour. When art unfolds freely, it can enliven a society immensely. It creates places of encounter and dialogue. The future of the globalized world, and even more so of humankind, lies in living in diversity. Despite the incredible knowledge available, it seems difficult to shape reality in a fulfilling way. The slogan “Vielfalt statt Einfalt” (diversity instead of simple-mindedness) could stand as a motto for this, reaching far beyond the fields of art and culture, for a dynamic yet respectful and peaceful coexistence.

Especially in times of crisis, it is important to lead by good example in order to shape the future. What is certain is that this should be about not “false” but “true” values. The present offers many perspectives for this. More than ever, ambitious collaborations between the most diverse partners from art, science, culture and business are needed, in order to increase the value of valuable contributions and thereby set impulses that are both entrepreneurial and societal.
